WordPress or Blogger?

Vivian Paige wrote a piece today which discusses some of the issues that comes about as a result of using WordPress to host a blog. Although she points out some other concerns, it appears as though this post was largely written as a result of the folks at WordPress deciding to implement a program called “Possibly Related Posts.” As Vivian pointed out, this feature was designed to automatically create links to other blogs that posted on similar topics but it actually frequently ends up linking to posts that are actually discuss completely unrelated topics.

Obviously that’s not a very good benefit, but I don’t think the problems with it end there. Once more people become aware of this new program, I believe there’s also the possibility of people using certain keywords in their posts just so that they can get linked to by other blogs. So until a few of the potential kinks are worked out, I’ve decided to disable the program from this blog.

So now we get down to the real heart of why I’ve written this post. For quite sometime now I’ve been thinking about beginning to use blogger to host my blog. In fact, I’ve actually been cross-posting many of my posts over at a new blog (see Fairfax Memo) for about two months just in case I did indeed decide to make the switch. While there are a few reasons I haven’t quite made the switch yet, I’d like to know if any of my readers have a preference. So feel free to email me or leave your thoughts in the comment section of this post.

  1. If you hang out in the WordPress forums at all, you’ll find a lot of folks leaving Blogger and coming here. Blogs don’t get hacked here. The spam control is excellent. And the community in the forums is, apparently, something that just doesn’t exist over there.

  2. Dump blogger-go with WordPress. I moved over a year ago, and have never regretted it-especially now that they have a full capacity in place to port over old posts on your blogger site.

if starting new-FORGET BLOGGER EXISTS-use WORDPRESS!!!

  3. I dunno, it could be that I’m such a technical illiterate, but I tried WordPress and ended up beating a hasty retreat back to Blogger.

I admit it sometimes frustrates me. But with the new widgets, it’s gotten a lot easier to update blogrolls and such.

I was never able to figure out how to do certain things on my blogroll over at WordPress (it’s been so long that I’ve forgotten what they were). But their not allowing Javascript and the CSS rather than just HTML were drawbacks for me.

I just want to write, not master new technical stuff. But Vivian and others think so highly of WordPress that maybe there is more to it and I should have had more patience.
