Tim Kaine on Earth Day

As part of his way of celebrating Earth Day today, Gov. Tim Kaine spoke to biology majors at VCU and then joined them as they participated in a study of the fish and other aquatic life in the James River. He also released the following statement about Earth Day.

“Whether it’s hiking on innumerable miles of trails, canoeing on our scenic rivers, or turning off the television and enjoying the outdoors, Earth Day gives all Virginians a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the God-given beauty of the Commonwealth. But it also reminds us that we need to do more for the environment every day.

“We must make conserving our resources and protecting them a permanent part of our every day lives. Simple changes will go a long way toward protecting and preserving the environment. Recycling and switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs, for example, are easy, individual actions to conserve resources and help combat global warming.

“Virginia is incredibly blessed with natural beauty and abundant resources. Let’s do our part to preserve what we have for our children and grandchildren in the future.”

As I pointed out in a post a few weeks ago, I think Virginians sometimes forget just how beautiful our great Commonwealth truly is. As Gov. Kaine pointed out, today is a fitting day to appreciate that beauty. For those of you who are in the Northern Virginia area, George Mason University has activities scheduled throughout today and the rest of the week that touch on environmental issues as the university celebrates Earth Week.

  1. I think it’s great Kaine is celebrating Earth Day, but … recycling and CFLs ain’t gonna stop global warming if we keep building new coal-fired power plants.
