They’re Off and Running

Democrats, and Virginians in general, deserve to be extremely happy with the results of yesterday’s elections. Not only do the results mean that we will have a more productive General Assembly, but it’ll be interesting to see if any momentum carries over into next year’s Congressional and Presidential elections as well. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, though, it’s important to remember that there is a special election for Congress in the 1st on December 11th.

Since the race will essentially only take place for a month, everything will be extremely compressed. Election day is coming up so fast, for instance, that the Democrats will be choosing their nominee this Saturday, November 10th. It therefore shouldn’t be to surprising that candidates were anxious to reach out to members of the press and Ted Hontz did just that by providing us with his reaction to elections in the 1st Congressional District.

Statement on the Performance of Democrats in Virginia’s First District in Tuesday’s elections from Ted Hontz, Democratic Congressional Candidate in Virginia’s First District:

“It’s clear the First Congressional District is turning blue like the rest of the state. It’s exciting to see Sen. Edd Houck reelected by a wide majority in the north end of the district and John Miller’s victory in the Senate at the south end. We now have a great opportunity to recapture the First Congressional District seat for the Democrats on Dec 11. “

Edd Houck has endorsed Ted Hontz in his bid to capture the Democratic nomination at the convention Saturday, Nov. 10 in Williamsburg. A special election will be held Dec. 11.

Other endorsements include Chairs of the Democratic Committees in Stafford County, Spotsylvania County and King George County; Democratic Candidate Albert Pollard; civil rights leader Rev. Lawrence Davies, who was the Democratic nominee in the First District race in 2000; and Admiral Robert J. Natter USN (Ret), former Commander In Chief of the Atlantic Fleet.

Although last night obviously belongs to all of the State and local candidates who worked so hard over the course of the last few months, I am glad to see that Hontz is showing the same enthusiasm to run an effective campaign. It will be interesting to see how this race progresses over the next few days as attention now begins to drift towards electing a new Representative.
